What is there to see in Maşukiye and Kartepe?

The best-known stop in the area is Maşukiye Waterfall, reached by a short path through the forest. The stream, wooden bridges and stalls selling local produce keep you company along the way. The higher parts of Kartepe are visited for snow scenery in winter and, in other seasons, for views that reach towards Sapanca Lake and the Gulf of İzmit. The walking paths on the shore of Sapanca Lake and the nature parks and highland meadows of Kartepe district are also good for a day out.

When to go

The waterfall is at its fullest in spring and after rain. The flow can drop towards the end of summer. Autumn, with its changing leaves, is the best season for photographs. In winter the paths may be snowy and icy. At weekend lunchtimes the waterfall path and the car parks get crowded.

What to check before you set out

  • The length and gradient of the path and whether it suits a pushchair
  • Where to park and what it costs
  • Whether there is an entrance fee
  • How slippery the ground is after rain
  • Toilets, prayer rooms and rest areas along the route
  • Sunset time: it gets dark early in the forest

Wearing shoes with a good grip, carrying water and taking your rubbish away with you is good for you and for nature.
